The Surgery Center at Hartselle
Health Park

Hartselle Health Park was established in 2021 to provide the community with local access to important healthcare services. Over the last two years, we’ve added physician clinics, imaging services including MRI and CT, and an urgent care clinic. In 2024, Hartselle Health Park ER will open to provide life-saving emergency care.

On October 18, Cullman Regional’s application with the Alabama Certificate of Need Review Board was approved to build a new state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center (ASC) at Hartselle Health Park. Construction is expected to be complete in early 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ASC?

An ambulatory surgery center (ASC) is a freestanding healthcare facility providing outpatient procedures and surgical care. ASCs are also sometimes referred to as outpatient surgery centers.

How does a local ASC benefit me?

Advances in surgical techniques, medical technology and anesthesia have made it possible to perform many common surgeries and procedures in an ASC. Having a procedure or surgery done at an ASC may mean a shorter admission procedure and quicker release once you’re ready to go home, giving you a more convenient, overall experience.

Is there a difference between surgery at an ASC and surgery in a hospital?

Not all surgeries are appropriate for an ASC setting, so the types of surgeries performed at a hospital may differ from those performed at an ASC. How outpatient surgeries are performed is NOT different in an ASC. ASCs are equipped with multiple operating rooms and recovery areas and staffed by the same clinical teams found in a hospital surgery department, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical nurses and other healthcare professionals.

What type of surgeries and procedures will be available at the ASC?

If approved by the State Health Planning and Development Agency Certificate of Need (CON) Review Board, the proposed ASC will be multi-specialty and able to provide a wide range of surgical procedures. The initial contemplated specialties for the ASC include general surgery, gynecology, and ophthalmology, but other specialties may be added as needs arise including podiatry, pediatrics, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Cullman Regional anticipates that many of its physicians would provide surgical care at the ASC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is family medicine?

These family care doctors are widely skilled with training in the care of patients at every stage of life, from birth through childhood, adulthood and old age. In residency, a family practitioner receives training on caring for the whole family, including pediatrics and OB/GYN care. A family practitioner may be right for you if you are looking for a doctor for yourself and your children, or one who can transition your teen from his/her pediatrician to an adult primary care provider.

What is internal medicine?

These doctors, also called internists, are trained to treat both simple and complex conditions from early adulthood through old age. While experts in primary care, they focus on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions that affect the internal organs — conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and lung disease. Internal medicine specialists often care for people with complex, chronic, and multisystem disorders.

What are the benefits of having a primary care doctor?

When you have a primary care doctor, you have a partner in health for life. By consistently seeing one primary care doctor, they will get to know you, your lifestyle and your family history. Over time, you’ll develop a trusting relationship where you feel comfortable sharing your health questions and concerns with someone you know will listen to you.

Your primary care doctor will help you stay healthy through regular checkups, preventative health care screenings and vaccinations. They can also help you successfully manage life-threatening and “silent” medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes. And if you ever need advanced or specialized care, your primary care doctor will connect you to highly-trained medical specialists they know and trust.

What is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?

A registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical education and experience in the care of the sick and in diagnosis, treatment and management of common and chronic illnesses. They can diagnose and treat medical conditions, administer vaccinations and prescribe medications. NPs offer a holistic and wellness orientation that emphasizes health education, risk identification and reduction and preventive care through lifestyle modification.

Because of growing time demands on physicians and the shortage of doctors in numerous specialties, both PAs and NPs provide a high quality, skilled and practical option for many of your healthcare needs.

What should I do if I need treatment outside of my doctor’s regular business hours?

For illnesses and injuries that are considered life-threatening, please call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

If you have a minor illness and believe you may be in need of treatment, you can visit one of Cullman Regional’s Urgent Care Centers. Click here to learn more about our urgent care services.

How early should I order refills?

While we strive to refill orders the same day, we recommend that you order refills when you have a 5-7 day supply of medication left so that there will be no interruption in your medication regimen. This allows our staff to process refill authorization requests and address other possible issues with insurance and/or medication supply.

How do I transfer my prescriptions from another pharmacy to the Cullman Regional Pharmacy?

During your first visit to the pharmacy, we will get the required information to request a transfer of existing, transferable prescriptions from your current pharmacy or medical provider. In addition, we will need to see your insurance cards and gather some basic information.

While we are able to dispense medications for most insurance companies, sometimes an insurance company will require us to transfer the prescription to another pharmacy.
